My practice is built on looking. I draw and paint from life wherever I can, moving between portraits, landscapes, and small studies of the everyday, and I treat each subject as a chance to understand it a little better. The medium changes with the subject, but the habit of close attention stays the same.

Drawing is the foundation of everything I do. Ink in particular asks for commitment, because a line cannot be taken back, and that discipline carries over into the painting and the photography. I keep the work fast and honest, made in sittings rather than laboured over, so that the life of the moment survives in the finished piece.

Daily practice matters to me. Projects like Inktober, where I make one drawing a day for a month, push the work somewhere that careful planning never could. I am interested in range, in being able to meet a person, a place, an animal, or a meal on its own terms, and in growing as an artist by drawing as much and as widely as I can.
